2020 English edition almanac

This page covers all 909 English cards of 2020, in five products: 216 on 7 February, 209 on 1 May, 201 on 14 August, 80 on 25 September and 203 on 13 November. Seven Japanese products feed them, and not one card crosses over on its Japanese release day — the shortest wait is eight weeks and the longest eighteen. The year opens with a set that contains no 2020 Japanese card at all: Sword & Shield base and VMAX Rising go on sale on the same morning, 7 February, and share nothing. Two things exist here that Japan did not print in 2020: Champion’s Path, a boxed special set with no Japanese release day, and the whole English side of the Shiny Star V story, which does not arrive until February 2021. 52 VMAX printings appear on this page for the first time in the language, and the Amazing Rare frame appears on six cards in November — the other three of Japan’s nine wait for 2021. What is not here: 0 GX, 0 Tag Team, 0 Prism Star, 0 Pokémon-EX, 0 Mega Evolution, 0 BREAK and 0 Legend cards — the same as Japan.

Five products, 909 cards, and seven Japanese sets arriving eight to eighteen weeks late

English 2020 begins with a set that is entirely Japanese 2019. Sword & Shield base and Japan’s VMAX Rising go on sale the same morning, 7 February, and share not one card: the 216 here are the two December halves — 138 Zacian V, 139 Zamazenta V and 142 Snorlax VMAX at 340 HP — with no GX anywhere. From there the lag is the story. VMAX Rising’s 86 cards wait twelve weeks for Rebel Clash, Mugen Zone’s 104 wait ten for Darkness Ablaze, Astonishing Volt Tackle’s 116 wait eight for Vivid Voltage — and Legendary Heartbeat’s 77 wait eighteen, the longest gap of the year. 104 Crobat V reaches English on 14 August, ten weeks after Japan printed it, and 044 Pikachu VMAX on 13 November, eight weeks after.

The numbers are smaller than Japan’s and arrive in fewer pieces. 909 cards in five products against 951 in seven, 124 Pokémon V printings from 70 names and 52 VMAX from 27, 6 Amazing Rare, 68 secrets, 744 Pokémon, 151 Trainers, 14 Energy and 88 artists. The shape is three Japanese pairs folded into three English sets — February’s and March’s into Rebel Clash, April’s and June’s into Darkness Ablaze, July’s and September’s into Vivid Voltage — plus an 80-card box spliced from four of them, plus one 330-card Japanese reprint set that never arrives as a set at all.

Every card below is the English printing, with its English scan, its English name and the number printed on the card.

Cards are grouped by the product they were sold in, in release order. The per-card commentary for every one of them is written on the Japanese page, because the two editions are the same card with different text on the face. Nothing is translated twice.

What happened this year

5 entries

02-07
Sword & Shield (swsh1), 216 cards — 202 numbered and fourteen secrets. The first English set with no GX in it, and the only 2020 English set built entirely from Japanese 2019: Japan’s own first set of the year sells on the same morning and the two share nothing. 138 Zacian V, 139 Zamazenta V and 142 Snorlax VMAX at 340 HP open the VMAX era here — four bodies, each printed twice — 178 Professor’s Research and 169 Marnie are the Supporters, and 186 Aurora Energy is the set’s only Energy card. All fourteen secrets sit past 202.
05-01
Rebel Clash (swsh2), 209 cards — 192 numbered and seventeen secrets. The set that absorbs Japan’s February and March wholesale: all 86 cards of VMAX Rising and 112 of Rebellion Crash’s 115 arrive together. 093 Dragapult VMAX at 320 and 137 Copperajah VMAX at 340 are the two biggest bodies, 154 Boss’s Orders is printed in English for the first time, and 165–168 Scoop Up Net and Tool Scrapper close the Trainer line. 104 Crobat V is missing, and that absence defines the English spring.
08-14
Darkness Ablaze (swsh3), 201 cards — 189 numbered and twelve secrets. 77 of Explosive Walker’s 86 and 104 of Mugen Zone’s 119. 104 Crobat V, 117 Eternatus VMAX at 340 and 019 Charizard V with its VMAX at 020 lead it, and 165 Piers, 168 Rose and 159 Bird Keeper are the Supporters. No Amazing Rare in this set — the frame Japan printed in July is held back until November, and then all six arrive at once.
09-25
Champion’s Path (swsh3.5), 80 cards — 73 numbered and seven secrets. The only English product of 2020 with no Japanese release day behind it, sold in boxes rather than boosters. 074 Charizard VMAX and 079 Charizard V are both secrets, above a numbered run ending at 073 Hop; the pack is filled out with nine cards of Explosive Walker, fourteen of Mugen Zone, two of Legendary Heartbeat and three of Astonishing Volt Tackle. It is the smallest English set since Detective Pikachu.
11-13
Vivid Voltage (swsh4), 203 cards — 185 numbered and eighteen secrets. Japan’s July and September arrive in one product, with the Amazing Rare frame inside it. 043 Pikachu V and 044 Pikachu VMAX at 310, 186–191 the six VMAX secrets, 192–197 six Supporter full arts and 203 Telescopic Sight as the last secret of the year. The six Amazing Rares — 009 Celebi, 050 Raikou, 082 Zacian, 102 Zamazenta, 119 Jirachi and 138 Rayquaza — are here and nowhere else in 2020.

Promos, decks & handouts

not itemised

Why this is empty. Everything on this page is a numbered product with a printed card count and a release day we can stand behind. Everything else that year is a handout or a box: the SWSH promos, the prerelease cards, the Elite Trainer Boxes and the tins. None of those has a per-card release date and distribution condition we have been able to verify, so none is listed and none is counted in the 909 above. Same rule as every earlier year on this site: a real card with no citable date is left out rather than guessed at.

2020-02-07216 cards

2020-02-07. 216 cards — 173 Pokémon, 42 Trainers and 1 Energy, 31 Pokémon V and 8 VMAX; 60 commons, 56 uncommons, 47 rares, 17 Double Rares, 6 Triple Rares, 16 Ultra Rares, 14 secret cards; 27 Water, 27 Fighting, 22 Grass, 19 Fire, 19 Colourless, 18 Lightning, 17 Metal, 13 Psychic and 11 Darkness; 71 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 19.

7 February, and the first English set with no GX in it at all. 202 numbered cards and fourteen secrets, 31 Pokémon V printings from 17 names and 8 VMAX printings from four. 138 Zacian V and 139 Zamazenta V are the two cards the format is built on, with full arts at 195 and 196 and secrets at 211 and 212. 142 Snorlax VMAX at 340 HP is the tallest body in the set and has a secret printing at 206; the other three VMAX are 050 Lapras, 080 Morpeko and 116 Stonjourner, each with a secret twin at 203–205. 178 Professor’s Research, 169 Marnie, 179 Quick Ball, 156 Air Balloon and 181 Rotom Bike are the Trainers, and 186 Aurora Energy is the only Energy card in the set. All fourteen secrets sit past 202: four VMAX at 203–206, four Supporters at 207–210, the two cover Pokémon at 211–212, and four Items at 213–216. Not one card here comes from a Japanese set released in 2020 — this is December 2019, shipped west three months later, on the same morning Japan sells VMAX Rising, with which it shares nothing.

2020-05-01209 cards

2020-05-01. 209 cards — 176 Pokémon, 28 Trainers and 5 Energy, 30 Pokémon V and 14 VMAX; 50 commons, 51 uncommons, 50 rares, 16 Double Rares, 7 Triple Rares, 18 Ultra Rares, 17 secret cards; 26 Grass, 23 Water, 22 Psychic, 21 Lightning, 20 Fighting, 18 Metal, 16 Fire, 16 Darkness and 14 Colourless; 75 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 28.

1 May, and the set where Japan’s February and March arrive together. 192 numbered cards and seventeen secrets, 30 Pokémon V printings from 16 names and 14 VMAX printings from seven. All 86 cards of VMAX Rising and 112 of Rebellion Crash’s 115 land here on the same morning — 093 Dragapult VMAX at 320 and 137 Copperajah VMAX at 340 are the two biggest bodies, each with a secret twin at 197 and 199. 154 Boss’s Orders is printed in English for the first time, with a full art at 189 and a secret at 200; 165 Scoop Up Net, 168 Tool Scrapper and 174 Twin Energy follow it to 207, 208 and 209. 171–174 are the four Special Energies, and the other six VMAX lines are the three starters plus Toxtricity, Malamar and Rillaboom. 104 Crobat V is not in this set — the most played Pokémon of the year waits for August, ten weeks after Japan printed it.

2020-08-14201 cards

2020-08-14. 201 cards — 172 Pokémon, 25 Trainers and 4 Energy, 23 Pokémon V and 12 VMAX; 53 commons, 50 uncommons, 52 rares, 14 Double Rares, 7 Triple Rares, 13 Ultra Rares, 12 secret cards; 26 Colourless, 21 Grass, 21 Darkness, 20 Water, 19 Fire, 18 Metal, 17 Psychic, 17 Fighting and 13 Lightning; 76 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 20.

14 August, and the set where the VMAX body stops being a headline. 189 numbered cards and twelve secrets, 23 Pokémon V printings from 14 names and 12 VMAX printings from seven. 104 Crobat V, 117 Eternatus VMAX at 340 and 019 Charizard V — with its VMAX at 020 — lead it, and 165 Piers, 168 Rose and 159 Bird Keeper are the Supporters. 172 Turbo Patch is the only Item with a secret at 200, and 174–176 are the set’s three Special Energies, with 201 the secret printing of Capture Energy. 77 of Explosive Walker’s 86 cards and 104 of Mugen Zone’s 119 arrive here together; the other nine and fourteen go into the September box, and one never comes across at all. There is not one Amazing Rare in this set — the frame Japan had already printed in July does not reach English until November, and then all six at once.

2020-09-2580 cards

2020-09-25. 80 cards — 57 Pokémon, 23 Trainers and no Energy cards, 16 Pokémon V and 6 VMAX; 21 commons, 23 uncommons, 10 rares, 11 Double Rares, 3 Triple Rares, 5 Ultra Rares, 7 secret cards; 14 Darkness, 11 Psychic, 10 Fighting, 7 Fire, 7 Water, 5 Grass, 2 Colourless and 1 Metal; 40 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 8.

25 September, and the only English product of 2020 with no Japanese release day behind it. 73 numbered cards and seven secrets, sold in boxes rather than boosters: 16 Pokémon V printings from 12 names and 6 VMAX printings from four. 074 Charizard VMAX and 079 Charizard V are both secrets, printed above a numbered run that ends at 073 Hop. The seven secrets are all named characters and bodies — three VMAX at 074–076, Kabu and Piers at 077–078, Charizard V at 079, and Suspicious Food Tin at 080. It splices nine cards of Explosive Walker, fourteen of Mugen Zone, two of Legendary Heartbeat and three of Astonishing Volt Tackle into one small product, and it is the smallest English set since Detective Pikachu in 2019. Nothing in it is new to Japan; everything in it is new to English.

The six Amazing Rares arrive here and nowhere else in 2020: 009 Celebi, 050 Raikou, 082 Zacian, 102 Zamazenta, 119 Jirachi and 138 Rayquaza, the same six Japan printed in July, renumbered and eighteen weeks later. 192–197 are the Supporter full arts — Allister, Bea, Beauty, Leon, Nessa and Opal — and 203 Telescopic Sight is the last secret of the year.

Shining Fates (swsh4.5), 72 numbered cards and one secret, with a Shiny Vault subset numbered above them — English’s own shiny product, sold in boxes, and the only place the last three Amazing Rares ever appear in English: Reshiram, Kyogre and Yveltal, the three cards Japan put inside November’s Shiny Star V. 35 more cards of that Japanese set land here too.
2021-03-19
Battle Styles (swsh5), and the format splits in two — Single Strike and Rapid Strike, a mechanic that is not in any 2020 product in either language. VMAX carries on; nothing with an A on it is ever printed again.

What English 2020 settles is that the lag is the product. Every Japanese set of the year reaches English between eight and eighteen weeks later, not one of them on the same day, and Champion’s Path is the only product in the year with no Japanese original at all. Three Japanese pairs become three English sets — February’s and March’s, April’s and June’s, July’s and September’s — and the year’s most played card, Crobat V, arrives ten weeks after its own block. The 330 cards of Shiny Star V never arrive as a set: 215 were already printed here, 37 are a different card of the same species, 20 pair with English printings already on sale in 2020, 35 wait for Shining Fates in February 2021, and 23 never come across in any form at all. The pack price does not move all year, and the shape does not either: 27 VMAX bodies across 52 printings, and not one product in the year without a VMAX line in it.

Release dates and product identities are connected to the English edition release register by set code. Sources are printed per product so a reader can check the claim without trusting this page alone. Unmatched products say so instead of borrowing another edition’s citation.

About this data

All 909 English cards of the five products are listed, and every one carries its English scan. The counts are 216, 209, 201, 80 and 203. 68 of them are secret cards — 14, 17, 12, 7 and 18 — and are shown at the numbers they actually print, past the total of their own set: 203–216, 193–209, 190–201, 074–080 and 186–203. Another 72 are full arts inside the numbered run, which is why a card numbered 195 can be rarer than one numbered 216.

This page lists cards, not commentary. Each entry is the scan, the number printed on the card, the English name, the rarity and the illustrator; the per-card commentary is written on the Japanese page for the same card, because the two editions are the same card with different text on the face. Nothing is translated twice, and nothing is written twice.

The two pages do not count the same cards, and the difference is the point. 909 English cards against 951 Japanese. Champion’s Path accounts for 80 of the gap on this side — a boxed set with no Japanese release day — while on the other side 37 Japanese cards of the November reprint set are, in English, a different card of the same species, 35 do not arrive until Shining Fates in February 2021, and 23 never come across.

The Amazing Rares are six here and nine in Japan. The three that are missing — Reshiram, Kyogre and Yveltal — are the ones Japan printed inside its November reprint set, and they do not reach English until 19 February 2021. They are recorded on this page as absent rather than assumed, which is why the English page counts six and the Japanese page counts nine. None of the six is in Darkness Ablaze: the frame debuts in English in November, four months after Japan.

VMAX is printed in English for the first time this year, and the source data does not label it. The English card database records the V suffix but not VMAX, so every one of the 52 VMAX printings on this page is identified by the name printed on it — Lapras VMAX, Copperajah VMAX, Pikachu VMAX — rather than by a field. The same rule as the Japanese page: what the card says wins over what the data says.

14 cards in this year carry no illustrator credit, and all 14 are Special Energy — a category that prints without an artist credit. Nothing is missing from the record and nothing is filled in with a guess. One of them, Twin Energy at 209, is a secret printing, so the gap shows up in the secret range as well as the numbered one.

Two things are declared rather than smoothed over. Champion’s Path is counted as 2020 because it went on sale on 25 September 2020, even though it corresponds to no Japanese product and pulls its cards from four earlier Japanese sets: the same rule this site used for Detective Pikachu in 2019. And the shiny reprints of Japan’s November set are not listed here as a product — they arrive in English in 2021, and this page does not pull them backwards into 2020 to make the two years look alike.

Five products, 909 cards, 124 Pokémon V printings from 70 names and 52 VMAX from 27, 6 Amazing Rare, 68 secrets, 744 Pokémon, 151 Trainers and 14 Energy — with no GX, no Tag Team, no Prism Star, no Pokémon-EX, no Mega Evolution, no BREAK and no Legend card anywhere in the year at all. English 2020 is the year the lag becomes visible: seven Japanese sets arrive between eight and eighteen weeks late, not one on the same day, Crobat V ten weeks after its own block, and the November reprint set not at all until the following February. The year opens with a set built entirely from Japanese December 2019 and closes with a set that is mostly Japanese September — and in between there is one product, 80 cards in a box, that Japan never had.
