English · 2017
This page covers the 713 English cards of 2017, in five products: 172 on 3 February, 169 on 5 May, 169 on 4 August, 78 on 6 October and 125 on 3 November. The four main sets arrive six to eight weeks behind the Japanese packs they are built from; Shining Legends arrives twelve weeks behind SM3+ and as a box rather than a booster box. There is not one Pokémon-EX, Mega Evolution or BREAK card in the year — those three bands end in 2016 on both sides of the Pacific — and every high card printed here is a GX: 140 GX prints from 48 names, and 87 secret cards. Two Japanese products do not cross in 2017 at all: the 125-card GX Battle Boost of October and the six Prism Star cards of December are both printed abroad on 2 February 2018, inside Ultra Prism, which is why this page stops at 713 cards and the Japanese page does not.
Five products, 713 cards, 140 GX prints — and the first year since 2011 in which English prints no EX, no Mega and no BREAK at all
English 2017 is the year the gap closes and then reopens. Sun & Moon arrives on 3 February, six weeks after Japan, and it is the last product in this archive that has to carry a mechanic over from the previous year: GX, Hyper Rare and the 30-pack box all land at once, and for the first time since 2011 there is nothing else in the high band. Guardians Rising in May and Burning Shadows in August are the two biggest sets of the year at 169 cards each, and between them they hold 39 and 38 GX prints. 060 Tapu Lele-GX is in Guardians Rising and it is the card the whole format is built around for the next two years.
The numbers are the largest English has ever printed in one year, and the narrowest in range. 713 cards, 140 GX prints from 48 names, 87 secret cards, 6 Shining cards and 13 Ultra Beast prints — but not one Pokémon-EX, not one Mega and not one BREAK, because all three died in 2016. Shining Legends is the year's odd product: 78 cards, sold in a box rather than a booster box, six of the eight Japanese Shining cards, and 076 Mewtwo-GX, a secret print that has no Japanese counterpart in SM3+ at all. Crimson Invasion closes the year with the Ultra Beasts as a group — 13 prints across Nihilego, Buzzwole, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela, Kartana and Guzzlord — and the six Prism Star cards of December never arrive: they wait for 2 February 2018.
Every card below is the English printing, with its English scan, its English name as printed, and its attack text in English.
Cards are grouped by the product they were sold in, in release order. Where a Japanese product was split across two English sets, or two Japanese products merged into one, the English set is listed as the unit it was sold in.
This page documents 713 main-series cards across five products on five release dates in 2017. It covers cards printed outside Japan only; printings for other editions are tracked separately.

Sun & Moon, 172 cards. The first English set with GX as the only high band — 27 GX prints, 23 secrets, 129 Pokémon and 13 basic Energy cards. 001 Caterpie to 137 Rainbow Energy is the numbered set, 138 to 149 are twelve full-art cards inside the numbering, and 150 to 172 is the 23-card secret band. 158 Nest Ball, 159 Rotom Dex, 160 Switch and 161 Ultra Ball are the four gold Items, 162 to 172 are eleven gold basic Energy cards — the first gold basic Energy in the game — and 012 Decidueye-GX, 035 Lapras-GX, 066 Lunala-GX and 089 Solgaleo-GX are the four GX cards the numbered set is read for.
Guardians Rising, 169 cards. 39 GX prints and 24 secrets — the most GX prints in any English set of the year — plus 23 Trainers and only 4 Energy cards. 060 Tapu Lele-GX carries Wonder Tag, a search for any Supporter the moment it is played, and it becomes the most played card of the generation; its rainbow secret is 155. 038 Wishiwashi-GX, 047 Tapu Koko-GX, 074 Lycanroc-GX, 085 Metagross-GX and 092 Sylveon-GX are the other GX cards that are played, and 161 Aqua Patch and 163 Field Blower are the two Trainers that shape the year.
Burning Shadows, 169 cards. 38 GX prints, 22 secrets and 29 Trainers, and the set where 020 Charizard-GX is printed — 250 HP, Wing Attack for 70, Crimson Storm for 300 at the cost of three Fire Energy, and a GX attack that mills the top ten cards of the opponent's deck — as the most collected card of the year. Guzma is the other half of the set: switch the opponent's Active out and bring up whatever you want, printed as a Supporter and played in every deck for two years. 017 Golisopod-GX, 021 Ho-Oh-GX, 063 Necrozma-GX, 080 Marshadow-GX, 088 Darkrai-GX and 093 Gardevoir-GX fill the rest of the GX band.
Shining Legends, 78 cards — the only English product of the year sold as a box rather than a booster box, and the only one with Shining cards in it: 6 of the 8 Japanese prints. 11 GX prints, 5 secrets and 27 artists, and 076 Mewtwo-GX is the one card in the set with no Japanese counterpart — the rainbow secret is printed here and not in SM3+. 009 Shining Genesect, 040 Shining Mew and 056 Shining Rayquaza are the three that get collected; Shining Celebi and Shining Lugia of the Japanese set do not cross in this product. 029 Raichu-GX, 039 Mewtwo-GX and 053 Zoroark-GX are the three GX cards that are actually played out of it.
Crimson Invasion, 125 cards. 25 GX prints, 13 secret cards and 13 Ultra Beast prints — the first English set to print the Ultra Beasts as a band rather than one at a time. 049 Nihilego-GX, 057 Buzzwole-GX and 070 Kartana-GX are the three that are played; 090 Silvally-GX is the set's other idea, a 210 HP GX that becomes whatever Memory is attached to it. 111 Olivia and 63a Guzzlord-GX are the two cards here with no Japanese counterpart.
2017-02-03. 172 cards — 129 Pokémon, 30 Trainers and 13 Energy, 27 of them GX; 23 secret cards; 57 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 30. Grass 22, Water 23, Colorless 21, Psychic 17, Darkness 12, Fighting 9, Fire 7, Metal 6, Lightning 5, Fairy 4 and Dragon 3.
The set that makes GX the only high card there is. 137 numbered cards, twelve full-art cards inside the numbering (138 to 149) and 23 secrets beyond it, and not one Pokémon-EX, Mega or BREAK anywhere in it — the three bands that carried 2011 to 2016 are simply gone. Only 17 of the 172 have a counterpart in the twelve Japanese products of this page: it is December 2016's collection crossing six weeks later, which is why January's Japanese Strength Expansion Pack mostly waits for later sets. 012 Decidueye-GX is the card the set is read for — Feather Arrow damages the Active and puts two counters on the Bench at the same time — and 035 Lapras-GX, 061 Espeon-GX, 066 Lunala-GX, 080 Umbreon-GX and 089 Solgaleo-GX are the rest of the numbered GX band. 158 Nest Ball, 159 Rotom Dex, 160 Switch and 161 Ultra Ball are the four gold Items, and 162 to 172 are eleven gold basic Energy cards. 149 Team Skull Grunt is the last full-art inside the numbering; everything above it is a secret.

The set that decides what the format is for two years. 156 of the 169 are Japanese cards of March's two packs, merged into one English set for the first time in the year. 060 Tapu Lele-GX is the reason: Wonder Tag searches any Supporter out of the deck the moment it is played, which turns every Supporter in the game into a card you can fetch, and it is played in four decks out of five until 2019. 038 Wishiwashi-GX, 047 Tapu Koko-GX, 074 Lycanroc-GX, 085 Metagross-GX and 092 Sylveon-GX are the other GX cards that get played, and 161 Aqua Patch and 163 Field Blower are the two Trainers that shape the year: one accelerates Water out of the discard pile, the other strips Tools and Stadiums off the board. The full-art band runs 131 to 145 and the 24 secrets 146 to 169, with 155 Tapu Lele-GX in rainbow closing the GX names.

The set with the year's most collected card in it. 166 of the 169 are Japanese cards of June's two packs, and of the three English cards that have no counterpart there, 027 Alolan Vulpix and 047 Togedemaru are the ones that get played. 020 Charizard-GX is the face card: 250 HP, Wing Attack for 70, Crimson Storm for 300 at the cost of three Fire Energy, and Raging Out-GX, which mills the top ten cards of the opponent's deck instead of doing damage — the highest printed damage on any 2017 card, and its secret print is 150. Guzma is the other half of the set, a Supporter that switches the opponent's Active out, printed here and played in every deck until 2019. 017 Golisopod-GX, 021 Ho-Oh-GX, 063 Necrozma-GX, 080 Marshadow-GX, 088 Darkrai-GX and 093 Gardevoir-GX fill the GX band.

A box, not a booster box — and the only English product of the year with Shining cards in it. 77 of the 78 are Japanese cards of July's SM3+, which is why the type spread is lopsided: one Fighting card, one Dragon card and one Colorless card in the whole set. 076 Mewtwo-GX is the card that is not from SM3+ — a secret print that exists in English only, 250 HP with Psychic for 30 and Psychic Infinity that adds 30 for every Energy attached, and it is the last card in the set. 009 Shining Genesect, 027 Shining Volcanion, 040 Shining Mew, 042 Shining Jirachi, 056 Shining Rayquaza and 057 Shining Arceus are the six Shining cards that cross; Shining Celebi and Shining Lugia of the Japanese set do not. 053 Zoroark-GX, 029 Raichu-GX and 039 Mewtwo-GX are the three GX cards that are played out of it.

Water 17, Psychic 16, Colorless 15, Grass 11, Fighting 10, Darkness 9, Metal 9, Lightning 8, Dragon 6, Fire 3 and Fairy 3.
The set where the Ultra Beasts arrive as a band. 123 of the 125 are Japanese cards of September's two packs, and the two that are not — 111 Olivia and 63a Guzzlord-GX — are English additions. 13 Ultra Beast prints across seven names: Nihilego, Buzzwole, Pheromosa, Xurkitree, Celesteela, Kartana and Guzzlord, three of them printed as a GX and the rest as plain Pokémon. 057 Buzzwole-GX is the one that is played — 190 HP, Jet Punch for 30 that also hits the Bench, Knuckle Impact for 160 — and 090 Silvally-GX is the set's second idea, a 210 HP GX whose type is decided by the Memory attached to it. No Prism Star card is in this set: the six of December wait for February 2018.

63aGuzzlord-GX★Also released this year: Japanese edition.
Ultra Prism (sm5), 173 cards — English's cut of October's GX Battle Boost together with both December packs. Prism Star reaches English here for the first time, six cards with ◇ after the name that go to the Lost Zone instead of the discard pile and that a deck may hold only one of, and Cynthia becomes the Supporter every deck in the west plays. This is the product that closes 2017: after 2 February every card the year printed and English was ever going to print has crossed, the 125-card GX Battle Boost that English skipped in October is inside it, and the six Prism Star cards come with it.
What English 2017 settles is that catching up does not mean being level. The four main sets arrive six to eight weeks behind Japan and each one is complete on the day it lands — but the two pages still end the year 162 cards apart, 875 in Japan against 713 abroad, and the two biggest pieces of the gap are products rather than cards: October's 125-card GX Battle Boost and December's six Prism Star cards both wait for 2 February. EX, Mega and BREAK end here on both sides of the Pacific and nothing replaces them as a band: GX is the only high card in the year, printed 140 times, and the game adds conditions instead of stages. The packet stays at ten cards and the box stays at 30 through all five products.
Release dates and product identities are connected to the English edition release register by set code. Sources are printed per product so a reader can check the claim without trusting this page alone. Unmatched products say so instead of borrowing another edition’s citation.
sm1 verified_secondarysm2 verified_secondarysm3 verified_secondarysm3.5 verified_secondarysm4 verified_secondaryAll 713 English cards of the five products are listed, and every one carries its English scan. The counts are 172, 169, 169, 78 and 125. 87 of them are secret cards — 23, 24, 22, 5 and 13 — and are shown at the numbers they actually print, past the total of their own set. 63a Guzzlord-GX in Crimson Invasion is the one card listed at a letter number rather than a count, and it is listed exactly as the card prints it rather than folded into 063.
The English card is the source for the English page. Name, type, HP, stage, retreat cost, illustrator, every attack with its cost and damage, and the English rules text of every Trainer are read from the English card record. The Japanese name is not shown on this page, and nothing is translated from it — the two editions are separate pages because they are separate printings, with different card counts, different secret bands and, in 2017, a different number of products.
Five products, 713 cards, 140 GX prints from 48 names, 6 Shining cards and 13 Ultra Beast prints from 7 names, with 87 secret cards and no Pokémon-EX, Mega or BREAK card anywhere in the year. 2017 is the year English stops being behind on mechanics and starts being behind on products: every set arrives complete, and yet the year ends 162 cards lighter than Japan — October's GX Battle Boost and the six Prism Star cards of December cross on 2 February 2018. The high band collapses to one card type and the price does not move: ten cards a packet, 30 packs a box, the same as 2016. What changes is what a card can be: a once-a-game attack, a name that means a group of Pokémon instead of a type, and a set sold in a box with no booster box at all.
