2018 English edition almanac

This page covers the 816 English cards of 2018, in five products: 173 on 2 February, 146 on 4 May, 183 on 3 August, 78 on 7 September and 236 on 2 November. The four main sets arrive eight to twelve weeks behind the Japanese packs they are built from; Dragon Majesty arrives five months behind April’s Dragon Storm and as a boxed product rather than a booster box. There is not one Pokémon-EX, Mega Evolution or BREAK card in the year — those three bands ended in 2016 — and every high card printed here is a GX: 136 GX prints from 49 names, 23 Prism Stars and 77 secret cards. What English does not print in 2018 is the point of the year: no Tag Team GX at all (that is Team Up, 31 January 2019), no shiny cards at all (that is Hidden Fates, 23 August 2019), and no cards from October’s Dark Order or December’s Tag Bolt. That is why this page stops at 816 cards while the Japanese page for the same year has 1117.

Five products, 816 cards, the Lost Zone in November — and a year that ends without Tag Team and without a single shiny card

English 2018 prints the Lost Zone and does not print the thing that follows it. 121 Tyranitar GX arrives on 2 November with a rule that sends whatever it Knocks Out to the Lost Zone instead of the discard pile — 090–092 Unown and 014 Jumpluff count that zone rather than the board — and 159 Lugia GX at 190 HP is the best card in the set. What does not arrive is Tag Team: Japan prints 23 cards with two Pokémon in the name and 240 to 300 HP in December, and English has to wait until 31 January 2019 to see any of them. The same is true of the 100 shiny cards printed in Japan’s November reprint set: they arrive in August 2019, nine months later.

A quiet year by the numbers, and an odd one by shape. 816 cards in five products, 136 GX prints from 49 names, 25 Ultra Beast prints from 15 names, 23 Prism Star cards, 77 secrets and 78 artists. Dragon Majesty is the only English product of 2018 with no thirty-pack box — ten five-card packs in a box, 78 cards, no Ultra Beast at all — and Lost Thunder is the largest set of the year at 236 cards, because it folds three Japanese products into one. Every main set still ships at ten cards a pack and thirty packs a box, and the price does not move all year. 133 of these 816 cards have no counterpart in Japan’s 2018 output at all — the English sets open the year by carrying the 2017 catalogue west, which is why the two pages for this year do not count the same cards.

Every card below is the English printing, with its English scan, its English name and the number printed on the card.

Cards are grouped by the product they were sold in, in release order. The per-card commentary for these cards is written on the Japanese page for the same card, because the two editions are the same card printed twice.

What happened this year

5 entries

02-02
Ultra Prism (sm5), 156 numbered cards. The set that opens the year by carrying the 2017 Japanese catalogue west: 105 of its 173 cards have no counterpart in Japan’s 2018 output, and only 31 come from January’s SM5+ Ultra Force. 119 Cynthia arrives here, and from this day it is in every deck in the west. Prism Star reaches English for the first time: six cards with a ◇ after the name, one per deck, which go to the Lost Zone instead of the discard pile.
05-04
Forbidden Light (sm6), 131 numbered cards. 095 Ultra Necrozma GX is 190 HP for one Psychic and one Metal — the cheapest 190 HP Basic English has printed — and 056 Naganadel attaches Energy out of the discard pile every turn. 141 and 145 are a gold Beast Ring and a gold Mysterious Treasure, the two cards the Psychic deck is built on, each printed twice in one set.
08-03
Celestial Storm (sm7), 168 numbered cards. Japan’s May mini-set and June expansion in one product, and the set where 109 Rayquaza GX arrives: 180 HP, Stormy Winds attaching a basic Energy out of the discard pile on arrival. 143 Shrine of Punishment taxes every GX in play, and 123 Acro Bike and 127 Copycat are the two cards that go into everything.
09-07
Dragon Majesty (sm7.5), 70 numbered cards. The only English product of 2018 with no thirty-pack box: ten five-card packs, a promo in every box, no Ultra Beast at all. 044 Salamence GX at 250 HP leads it, 007 Victini ◇ and 061 Lance ◇ are the two Prism Stars, and 078 is a secret Ultra Necrozma GX printed at the end of a Dragon set. 59 of the 78 come from Japan’s April mini-set Dragon Storm, which English skipped in May.
11-02
Lost Thunder (sm8), 214 numbered cards — the largest English set of the year. 121 Tyranitar GX sends what it Knocks Out to the Lost Zone, 159 Lugia GX is 190 HP, and 090–092 are three Unown that win the game outright. Three Japanese products are folded into this one set, and Japan released a 250-card reprint set the same morning that English never received. This is English’s last 2018 product: nothing else crosses before the year ends.

Promos, decks & handouts

not itemised

Why this is empty. Everything on this page is a numbered product with a printed card count and a release day we can stand behind. Everything else that year is a handout or a box: the SM promos, the prerelease kits, and the tins sold between sets. None of those has a per-card release date and distribution condition we have been able to verify, so none is listed and none is counted in the 816 above. Same rule as every earlier year on this site: a real card with no citable date is left out rather than guessed at.

SM5 · Ultra Prism

2018-02-02173 cards

2018-02-02. 173 cards — 137 Pokémon, 31 Trainers and 5 Energy, 27 of them GX, 6 Ultra Beast and 6 Prism Star; 45 commons, 44 uncommons, 42 rares, 25 gold cards, 17 secrets; 21 Grass, 19 Metal, 17 Water, 16 Psychic, 16 Colorless, 11 Dragon, 10 Fire, 10 Lightning, 7 Fighting, 7 Darkness and 3 Fairy; 46 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 29.

The February set, and the one that carries the 2017 Japanese catalogue into English. 156 numbered cards, seventeen secrets (157–173), 27 GX, six Ultra Beasts and six Prism Stars. 119 Cynthia is the card that decides the year — shuffle your hand into the deck and draw six, no condition and no cost — and 148 is the gold printing of it in the same set. Prism Star arrives in English for the first time: 077 Darkrai ◇, 089 Solgaleo ◇, 120 Cyrus ◇ and three more, cards you may own one of which go to the Lost Zone instead of the discard pile. Only 31 of its 173 cards are from January’s Japanese SM5+, and 105 of the rest have no counterpart in Japan’s 2018 output at all — the year’s opening set is mostly the 2017 catalogue, and the 173 itself is 156 numbered cards plus seventeen secrets.

2018-05-04146 cards

2018-05-04. 146 cards — 119 Pokémon, 24 Trainers and 3 Energy, 26 of them GX, 8 Ultra Beast and 5 Prism Star; 33 commons, 36 uncommons, 41 rares, 21 gold cards, 15 secrets; 25 Fighting, 19 Psychic, 18 Water, 11 Grass, 10 Fairy, 8 Fire, 7 Dragon, 6 Lightning, 6 Colorless, 5 Darkness and 4 Metal; 47 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 24.

The May set, and the one that makes Psychic a deck. 131 numbered cards, fifteen secrets (132–146), 26 GX and eight Ultra Beasts — the largest Ultra Beast count of any English set this year. 095 Ultra Necrozma GX is the headline: 190 HP for one Psychic and one Metal — the cheapest 190 HP Basic English printed in 2018 — with Sky-Scorching Light GX hitting once for every Prize card already taken. 056 Naganadel attaches a basic Energy out of the discard pile every turn, 102 Beast Ring attaches two basic Energy to an Ultra Beast while the opponent holds exactly three or four Prizes, and 113 Mysterious Treasure searches the whole line out. 141 and 145 are the gold Beast Ring and gold Mysterious Treasure — the two cards that hold the deck together, printed twice each in one set.

2018-08-03. 183 cards — 140 Pokémon, 41 Trainers and 2 Energy, 29 of them GX, 5 Ultra Beast and 3 Prism Star; 40 commons, 62 uncommons, 38 rares, 28 gold cards, 15 secrets; 24 Grass, 19 Psychic, 18 Water, 18 Metal, 13 Fighting, 13 Colorless, 11 Lightning, 10 Fire, 9 Dragon and 5 Darkness; 59 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 29.

The August set, and English’s biggest of the year until November. 168 numbered cards, fifteen secrets (169–183), 29 GX and five Ultra Beasts. 109 Rayquaza GX is the card: 180 HP, Stormy Winds discards the top three cards and attaches a basic Energy out of the discard pile the moment it hits the Bench, and Dragon Break does 30 for every benched Pokémon. 031 Articuno GX, 056 Mr. Mime GX and 090 Scizor GX are the other three, 143 Shrine of Punishment — one damage counter on every GX in play between turns — is the Stadium the format is rebuilt around, and 123 Acro Bike and 127 Copycat are the two cards every list runs. Japan’s May mini-set and June expansion are folded into this one product, which is why 70 of these cards were sold in an 86-card set eleven weeks earlier.

SM7.5 · Dragon Majesty

2018-09-0778 cards

2018-09-07. 78 cards — 66 Pokémon, 12 Trainers and no Energy cards, 15 of them GX and 2 Prism Star; 23 commons, 23 uncommons, 12 rares, 12 gold cards, 8 secrets; 27 Dragon, 18 Water, 16 Fire, 3 Colorless, 1 Fighting and 1 Darkness; 42 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 12.

Not a booster box. 70 numbered cards, eight secrets (071–078), 15 GX, two Prism Stars and no Ultra Beast at all, sold as a boxed product of ten five-card packs with a promo card in every box — the only 2018 English product with no thirty-pack box. 044 Salamence GX is the headline at 250 HP, with 037 Dragonite GX, 041 Altaria GX and 048 White Kyurem GX around it; 007 Victini ◇ and 061 Lance ◇ are the two Prism Stars. 078 is a secret Ultra Necrozma GX — a Psychic and Metal card printed at the end of a Dragon set, which is the oddest single card in the English year. 59 of the 78 come from Japan’s April mini-set Dragon Storm, five months late.

2018-11-02236 cards

2018-11-02. 236 cards — 192 Pokémon, 43 Trainers and 1 Energy, 39 of them GX, 6 Ultra Beast and 7 Prism Star; 56 commons, 59 uncommons, 66 rares, 33 gold cards, 22 secrets; 43 Grass, 24 Psychic, 24 Fairy, 20 Water, 19 Fire, 18 Lightning, 17 Colorless, 12 Metal, 9 Fighting and 6 Darkness; 50 artists worked on it and 5ban Graphics drew 29.

The November set, and the largest English set of 2018 at 236 cards. 214 numbered cards, 22 secrets (215–236), 39 GX and seven Prism Stars — more GX prints than any other English set this year. 121 Tyranitar GX is 250 HP and its Lost Out rule sends whatever it Knocks Out to the Lost Zone, which is the mechanic the set is named after; 159 Lugia GX is 190 HP with a 170-damage attack, and 090–092 are three Unown that each win the game outright if their condition is met. 188 Professor Elm’s Lecture and 193 Whitney are the Supporters the Lost Zone decks need, 177 Fairy Charm Dragon, 178 Heat Factory ◇ and 017 Shuckle GX close the utility end, and 014 Jumpluff and 087 Natu count the Lost Zone rather than the board. Three Japanese products are inside this one set — July’s Thunderclap Spark, August’s Fairy Rise and September’s Super-Burst Impact — which is why Japan released a 250-card reprint set the same morning that English never received.

Team Up (sm9), 196 cards — the product where Tag Team reaches English, eight weeks after Japan. 165 Magikarp & Wailord GX brings a 300 HP Basic with it, and the twenty-odd 2018 Japanese cards left over from Dark Order and Tag Bolt arrive here as well.
2019-08-23
Hidden Fates (sma), the Shiny Vault — 90 of the 100 shiny cards Japan printed in November 2018 arrive here, renumbered SV1–SV94 and sold in tins rather than as a booster. It is the last of 2018’s cards to cross, nine months after the set they were printed in.

What English 2018 settles is that a year can be defined by what is missing from it. Japan prints eleven products and 1,117 cards; English prints five and 816, and the three products it skips are the three that matter most in retrospect — October’s Dark Order, December’s Tag Bolt and November’s 250-card reprint set. The Lost Zone does arrive, in November, and Cynthia and Ultra Necrozma and Rayquaza GX all arrive on time: the sets English does print are complete, and complete on the day. The gap is not in the cards, it is in the calendar — and it closes eight weeks later, on 31 January 2019, when Tag Team lands and 2018’s leftover cards finally cross.

About this data

All 816 English cards of the five products are listed, and every one carries its English scan. The counts are 173, 146, 183, 78 and 236. 77 of them are secret cards — 17, 15, 15, 8 and 22 — and are shown at the numbers they actually print, past the total of their own set.

This page lists cards, not commentary. Each entry is the scan, the number printed on the card, the English name and the rarity; the per-card commentary is written on the Japanese page for the same card, because the two editions are the same card with different text on the face. Nothing is translated from the Japanese, and no Japanese name is shown here.

The pairing is the reason the two pages do not count the same cards. 133 of these 816 cards have no counterpart among the 1117 Japanese cards of 2018 at all — 105 of them in Ultra Prism, 15 in Forbidden Light, 6 in Celestial Storm, 2 in Dragon Majesty and 5 in Lost Thunder — because the English sets open the year by carrying the 2017 Japanese catalogue west, and only catch up with Japan’s own 2018 releases later. 0 Tag Team cards and every shiny card are absent because they were printed in 2019. A card that appears in both editions appears once on each page, with the number its own edition prints.

GX cards are recorded by the stage printed on them, and in 2018 that is still rarely たね: 044 Salamence GX is a Stage 2 at 250 HP, 017 Shuckle GX is a Basic, 090 Scizor GX is a Stage 1. The stage is read from the card, not assumed.

A handful of cards in this year arrive from the source with no illustrator credit at all — the gold and rainbow secrets at the end of the older sets — and they are listed without one rather than given a name. Where a card’s rarity is not printed on the face, the field is left empty rather than filled with a guess.

Dragon Majesty is the one product on this page that is not a booster box, and it is marked as such: 78 cards, ten five-card packs, a promo card in every box, no Ultra Beast and no thirty-pack box. Nothing else in English 2018 breaks the pattern: ten cards a pack, thirty packs a box, five sets, and a year that ends 301 cards shorter than Japan’s — because the three Japanese products that did not cross in 2018 cross in 2019.

Five products, 816 cards, 136 GX prints from 49 names, 25 Ultra Beast prints from 15 names and 23 Prism Star cards, with 77 secret cards, and no Pokémon-EX, Mega or BREAK card anywhere in the year. 2018 is the year English prints a mechanic Japan had been building toward and misses the one it was building toward next: the Lost Zone arrives in November, complete and correct, and Tag Team — two Pokémon on one card, 300 HP, two Prizes — waits until the following January. The set count is five against Japan’s eleven, and the difference is not a translation problem but a calendar one: Dragon Majesty arrives five months late and as a box, and the three products that never arrive in 2018 arrive together, eight weeks later, in a set called Team Up. The pack does not change: ten cards, thirty to a box, the same price all year.
