Pokémon TCG Almanac · 2000 · English edition
This page follows the cards printed outside Japan: five sets, 588 cards, in one calendar year. Japan shipped three sets and 210 cards, and the two lists still do not line up — Team Rocket is 83 cards against Japan's 65, and Gym Heroes and Gym Challenge cut Japan's two Gym expansions differently. Japan's side of 2000 has its own yearbook, the 2000 Japanese edition.
Five sets, 588 cards — and by December the English line had caught up to Japan's February.
24 February 2000: Base Set 2, 130 cards — Base Set and Jungle reprinted as one set, with no Fossil cards in it and nothing new in it. It is the only English set of the year that moved the game nowhere.
Then four sets in eight months: Team Rocket (24 April, 83), Gym Heroes (14 August, 132), Gym Challenge (16 October, 132) and Neo Genesis (16 December, 111). Every one is bigger than the Japanese set it came from, and none of them follows Japan's cut: the two Gym sets are one re-cut of Japan's fifth and sixth expansions, and Neo Genesis numbers six basic Energy cards Japan left unnumbered.
How to read this page. Every section opens and closes. The timeline comes first, then the special cards, then the five sets. At 588 cards the year is too long to write up twice, and every illustration here already has its commentary on the Japanese page for the year it first appeared, so cards are shown as a card face, number, name and rarity. Each set opens with a Japan vs English comparison: the exact count difference, and every card that exists on only one side.
Rarity is as printed. Two things to keep in mind: Base Set 2 is a reprint set, so its cards also appear on the 1996, 1997 pages; and prices are the US list price of the period, $3.29 for an eleven-card pack.
This page documents 588 main-series cards across five products on five release dates in 2000. It covers cards printed outside Japan only; printings for other editions are tracked separately.

How many of these 588 cards are shown with a card face? All 588 cards have a card face on record.
Base Set 2, 130 cards. Base Set and Jungle merged into one 130-card set as a way of keeping the first two sets in print. No Fossil cards, no new cards — the only English set of 2000 that added nothing to the game.
Team Rocket, 83 cards — Japan's set had 65. The extra eighteen include Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise, Dark Dragonite, Dark Alakazam, Dark Machamp, Dark Gyarados and Dark Raichu, plus Rainbow Energy, Here Comes Team Rocket! and Rocket's Sneak Attack.
Gym Heroes, 132 cards, and on 10-16 Gym Challenge, another 132. Japan's fifth and sixth expansions (96 and 98 cards) were re-cut into two equal halves for English. The result: 57 English-only cards in Gym Heroes and 21 Japanese cards left out, then 53 and 19 in Gym Challenge. The English split simply does not follow Japan's.
Neo Genesis, 111 cards. Japan's set had 96. Six basic Energy cards and the nine starter evolutions of Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile are numbered cards in the English set. This is the set that closes the gap: it reaches Japan's February 2000 with ten months' lag.
The lag collapses from three years to ten months. In January 1999 the English line was printing 1996 material; by December 2000 it was printing material ten months old. Everything in between — five sets, 588 cards — was spent catching up.

Not a new set but a compilation — 130 cards re-cut from Base Set (1996), Jungle (1997) and Team Rocket (1997), released in English only. Eleven cards a pack at $3.29, thirty-six packs a box, twenty holofoil. Japan has no equivalent; the point was to let one set cover three years of cards.
24 February 2000. Not a new set but a compilation, re-cutting 130 cards from Base Set (1996), Jungle (1997) and Team Rocket (1997). It exists only in English; Japan has no equivalent.
Twenty of the 130 are holofoil, carried over unchanged from the three sets it draws on. Every illustration also appears on the 1996 and 1997 pages, so the card faces are reused here. The point of the compilation was to let a new player buy three years of cards in one set.
Base Set 2 reprints Base Set and Jungle in one 130-card set. No Fossil cards are in it, and no new cards — 68 of the 198 cards in Japan's 1996–97 output are absent from this set.
Only in the Japanese set (68): Aerodactyl, Arbok, Articuno, Clefairy Doll, Cloyster, Devolution Spray, Ditto, Dragonite, Eevee, Ekans, Electrode, Energy Search, Flareon, Gambler, Gastly, Gengar, Geodude, Gloom, Golbat, Golduck, Golem, Graveler, Grimer, Haunter, Hitmonlee, Horsea, Hypno, Jolteon, Kabuto, Kabutops, Kingler, Koffing, Krabby, Lapras, Machamp, Magmar, Magneton, Mankey, Mew, Moltres, Mr. Fuji, Muk, Mysterious Fossil, Oddish, Omanyte, Omastar, Pikachu, Pokémon Flute, Ponyta, Porygon, Primeape, Psyduck, Raichu, Rapidash, Recycle, Revive, Sandslash, Seadra, Shellder, Slowbro, Slowpoke, Tentacool, Tentacruel, Vaporeon, Vileplume, Weezing, Zapdos, Zubat

Two years and five months after Japan's November 1997 release. Eighty-two cards plus one secret (Dark Raichu, 83/82), eighteen holofoil. It runs eighteen cards ahead of Japan's 65 because of non-holo prints of rares that were holo-only in Japan. Dark Raichu was written for the English set and never appeared in Japan's Team Rocket.
24 April 2000, two years and five months after Japan's November 1997 release. Eighty-two cards plus one secret (Dark Raichu, 83/82), with eighteen holofoil.
Eighty-three against Japan's 65. The extra eighteen are non-holo prints of rares that were holo-only in Japan. Dark Raichu was written for the English set and was not in Japan's Team Rocket — it came home a year later as the secret card of Japan's eighth expansion.
Eighteen more than Japan's 65. The extras are not padding: they include Dark Charizard, Dark Blastoise, Dark Dragonite, Dark Alakazam, Dark Machamp, Dark Gyarados and Dark Raichu, plus Rainbow Energy, Here Comes Team Rocket! and Rocket's Sneak Attack.

14 August 2000, one year and ten months after Japan's Leaders' Stadium. 132 cards built around Brock, Misty, Lt. Surge and Erika; nineteen holofoil.
132 against Japan's 96; the extra 36 are non-holo rare reprints. The defining feature of the Gym line is that the Pokémon carry their owner's name — "Brock's Onix" — which makes the card names unusually long.
Gym Heroes takes Japan's fifth and sixth expansions and keeps 132 cards of the 194. Fifty-seven of the cards below have no Japanese counterpart in the fifth expansion, and 21 of Japan's are missing — this is a re-cut, not a reprint.

Only ten months after Japan's 4 February release — the 27-month gap of 1999 collapsed here. 111 cards = Japan's 96 + six basic Energy + nine non-holo second prints of the starters; nineteen holofoil. Darkness, Metal, Baby Pokémon and Pokémon Tools all arrive in English at once, and the new card frame starts here.
16 December 2000 — ten months after Japan's 4 February release. The 27-month gap of 1999 collapsed here. 111 cards = Japan's 96 + six basic Energy cards + nine non-holo second prints of the starters.
The fifteen-card gap is six basic Energy cards (106–111) plus nine low-HP second prints of the starter lines: Chikorita 54, Bayleef 29, Meganium 11, Cyndaquil 57, Quilava 47, Typhlosion 18, Totodile 81, Croconaw 32, Feraligatr 5. Each line appears twice so that a player can start from the Stage 1 or from the Basic.
Fifteen more than Japan's 96: six basic Energy cards and the nine starter evolutions of Chikorita, Cyndaquil and Totodile are numbered cards in the English set. Nothing was removed.
Not in this Japanese set (15 names): Bayleef, Chikorita, Croconaw, Cyndaquil, Feraligatr, Fighting Energy, Fire Energy, Grass Energy, Lightning Energy, Meganium, Psychic Energy, Quilava, Totodile, Typhlosion, Water Energy

Neo Discovery, 75 cards, from Japan's July 2000 set of 57 — the four Unown are numbered individually here, and Espeon, Umbreon, Scizor, Tyranitar and Houndoom appear; Japan's Dark Raichu and Ruin Wall do not.
Southern Islands, 18 cards — Japan's July 1999 set, arriving two years late as a nine-card folder pair rather than a booster set.
Neo Revelation, 66 cards, from Japan's November 2000 set of 57. Nine cards have no Japanese counterpart, among them Celebi, Entei, Ho-Oh, Lugia, Raikou and Suicune.
Neo Destiny, 113 cards — ten months after Japan, same count, and the last English set to carry a 1st Edition stamp.
Expedition Base Set, 165 cards, nine and a half months after Japan's Base Expansion Pack. Packs drop to nine cards and it becomes the first English set with no 1st Edition.
The gap kept shrinking: three years in 1999, ten months by late 2000, ten months again in 2002. What the English line never got was its own material — every one of these sets is Japanese work, reprinted, and 2001 is the year that becomes the whole story.
Release dates and product identities are connected to the English edition release register by set code. Sources are printed per product so a reader can check the claim without trusting this page alone. Unmatched products say so instead of borrowing another edition’s citation.
base4 verified_secondarybase5 verified_secondarygym1 verified_secondarygym2 verified_secondaryneo1 verified_secondaryCard faces are the English-language scans (TCGdex and our own archive). Where the same illustration appears on a Japanese page, that page carries the write-up — the picture is identical.
Set dates, card counts and pack contents come from the set records and were checked against the Japanese pages card by card.
Prices are the US list price of the period, not a present-day market price.
The Japan vs English comparison is computed from the two card lists, so its counts and names always match the cards on the page.
Base Set 2 repeats cards from the 1996 and 1997 pages. That is a property of the set, not a duplicate page: the English printing is a separate product with its own date and pack.
2000 in one line: the year the English game caught up — five sets and 588 cards, four of them Japanese material from 1997 and 1998, and by December only ten months behind. The catching-up was real; what it did not do was give the English market anything of its own.
