English edition · 2002
This page covers the English market's three sets of 2002, 388 cards. Japan released four sets that year — 364 cards — and none of them came out in English until 2003 (Aquapolis in January, Skyridge in May). Japan's 2002 is on its own page.
Three sets, 388 cards, and every one of them already printed in Japan a year or more earlier
28 February: Neo Destiny, 113 cards, from Japan's April 2001 set of the same count. 24 May: Legendary Collection, 110 cards, with no Japanese original at all. 15 September: Expedition Base Set, 165 cards, from Japan's December 2001 Base Expansion Pack of 128.
That is the English year. Japan printed 364 cards in 2002 and not one of them shipped in English that year — the four e-Card expansions waited for Aquapolis and Skyridge in 2003, where two Japanese sets were merged into one English set. The one-to-one set mapping that had held since 1996 ended here.
The English sets are shown as a compact grid — card face, number, name, rarity — because the full notes for these cards belong to the Japanese pages where they first appeared. Every entry links back to the year that printed it first.
About the pictures. These are the English cards themselves, not borrowed scans: every one of the 388 is a scan of the card as it was sold in English. Neo Destiny is the only set of the three that still carries a 1st Edition stamp.
This page documents 388 main-series cards across three products on three release dates in 2002. It covers cards printed outside Japan only; printings for other editions are tracked separately.

What release dates does this page cover?3 release dates, from 2002-02-28 to 2002-09-15.
How many of these 388 cards are shown with a card face? All 388 cards have a card face on record.
Neo Destiny, 113 cards — 105 numbered plus eight secrets. Japan had it in April 2001; the count did not change. It was the last English set with a 1st Edition stamp, and the last of the Neo series.
Legendary Collection, 110 cards. Every card is a reprint — Base Set, Jungle, Fossil, Team Rocket, and the Base Set 2 versions of the same. No Japanese set corresponds to it: this is the only English set of the year that Japan never had.
Legendary Collection puts a reverse holofoil in every pack. Not a holo, not a parallel rare — a foil treatment applied to the whole card face except the artwork, on every card in the set. Every English set for the next decade would carry one.
Expedition Base Set, 165 cards, from Japan's 128-card Base Expansion Pack. Thirty-seven cards were added — the single largest gap between a Japanese set and its English counterpart in the game's history to that point.
Expedition is the first English set with the e-Reader strip. The widened bottom border that Japan had used since December 2001 arrives in the West in the same month as the e-Reader itself.
The e-Reader launches in North America. The dot-code strip on every Expedition card could be scanned for animations and minigames. The accessory was discontinued within two years; the strips stayed on the cards until 2003.
Best of Game, nine promotional cards distributed through leagues — Electabuzz, Hitmonchan, Professor Elm, Rocket's Scizor, Rocket's Sneasel, Dark Ivysaur, Dark Venusaur, Rocket's Mewtwo, Rocket's Hitmonchan.
No Crystal Pokémon, no H-numbering, no secret rares in the English 2002. All three of those arrive in 2003 with Aquapolis. The English card of 2002 is structurally the same object it had been in 2001.
Wizards of the Coast was on its way out. Nintendo had been preparing to bring distribution in-house since 2001. Skyridge in May 2003 would be the final Wizards set, and it got one print run.
28 February 2002 — Japan's tenth expansion, ten months late, 105 numbered cards plus eight secrets. The last English set with a 1st Edition stamp.
Ninety-eight Pokémon, fourteen Trainers and one Special Energy. The eight Shining cards are the reason the set is remembered: Shining Charizard, Shining Tyranitar, Shining Steelix and company, printed as ordinary secret rares rather than as a separate rarity — exactly as Japan had them in April 2001.

Nineteen holofoil rares, thirty-six uncommons, thirty-six commons, and a reverse holofoil of every card in the set — the first reverse holofoil in English.

110Potion15 September 2002 — Japan's Base Expansion Pack of December 2001, grown from 128 cards to 165. The first English set with the e-Reader strip and the first with the widened e-Card border.
One hundred and sixty-five cards where Japan had 128: thirty-seven additions, the largest such gap in the game's history to that point. The Japanese set's holofoil run of 32 is matched, and the numbering starts again at 1 — Expedition is the set that resets the English count, which is why every English set after it is numbered from 1 to its own total.

Aquapolis, 186 cards — built from two Japanese sets, The Town on No Map and Wind from the Sea. The H-numbered holofoil run and the Crystal Pokémon both start here.
Skyridge, 182 cards — built from Split Earth and Mysterious Mountains. The final Wizards of the Coast expansion, one print run, and today the most expensive Wizards set per card.
EX Ruby & Sapphire — The Pokémon Company takes over distribution. No e-Reader strip, no thick border, a new card design. Everything on this page belongs to the era that set closed.
Read the dates as a pair. In 2002 Japan printed 364 cards the West could not buy, and the West printed 388 cards Japan had already sold. The two editions were never further apart.
Release dates and product identities are connected to the English edition release register by set code. Sources are printed per product so a reader can check the claim without trusting this page alone. Unmatched products say so instead of borrowing another edition’s citation.
neo4 verified_secondarylc verified_secondaryecard1 verified_secondaryAll 388 cards are listed. Numbers, names, types, categories, rarities and illustrators come from TCGdex's English records for neo4, lc and ecard1. Set totals match the printed sets — 113 / 110 / 165 — including Neo Destiny's eight secrets.
Rarity is taken from the card, not inferred from the number. Neo Destiny's eight Shining cards are filed by the source as ordinary rares, and they are shown as Rare here even though they sit at 106–113 outside the numbered run. Expedition's holofoil rares are shown as Holo Rare where the card has a holo printing and no plain one.
Neo Destiny and Expedition are not new material and are not presented as such. Every card in both sets was printed in Japan first — Neo Destiny in April 2001, Expedition in December 2001. The count of the Japanese original is given in each set's lead so the two can be compared directly.
Legendary Collection has no Japanese original, and that is stated rather than left to be guessed. All 110 cards are reprints of cards from Base Set through Team Rocket, including the Base Set 2 printings of cards that had already been reissued once. The set is the first English appearance of the reverse holofoil.
No card face is invented or borrowed on this page. All 388 scans are of the English cards as sold. The nine Best of Game promos have no scans in our sources, so they are named in the promos section instead of being given entries with blank or substituted pictures.
Three sets, 388 cards, and a year in which the English market reprinted Japan's past while Japan printed a future the West would not see until 2003. Expedition is the hinge: it brought the e-Card border and the e-Reader strip to English players, and it was the last set where an English expansion corresponded to exactly one Japanese set. From Aquapolis onward, two Japanese sets go into one English set — and the numbers stop lining up forever.
