The Most Expensive Riftbound Cards, and Why Set One Leads

Written by

in

Riftbound has been on sale for about a year, which is long enough for a structure to form and short enough for that structure to be readable. Almost everything that decides which version of a card leads in this game is published by the publisher, because the game was designed with treatments and slot placement as its scarcity mechanism rather than with a decades-old back catalogue behind it.

This page sets out that structure. It does not rank cards by value, because this site publishes no price for Riftbound cards, and a one-year-old game does not have the settled sales history that would make such a ranking checkable anyway.

Quick answer

Five things separate one version of a Riftbound card from another: which set it came from, which treatment it carries, whether it is one of the Overnumbered cards that also carry an artist’s signature, which champion it depicts, and whether it has been graded. The first, second and third are published by Riot; the fourth is a pattern in the game’s own product line; and the fifth is the only layer that happens after the card is made.

The five layers that decide which version leads

Layer What it is Where it is settled
Set Which set the card came from, and whether that set is still being printed Published by the publisher, set by set
Treatment Whether the copy is a standard card, an alternate art, a Special alternate art, an Overnumbered card or the Ultimate Rare Printed on the card; the ladder is published
Signature Whether an Overnumbered card also carries the artist’s signature Published by the publisher
Champion Which champion the card depicts, and how often that champion appears across products Published by the publisher, product by product
Grade Whether the copy has been graded and sealed, and at what grade Determined by a grading company, after the card is made

The ladder in the second row is the part of this game that differs most from an older card game. Instead of relying on how hard a card is to pull, Riftbound states which treatments exist and where in a pack each one can appear, which means the structure of what is scarce is public even though the individual cards are not ranked.

Why the first set is the one that cannot be remade

The first Riftbound set was printed before the game had a market, a player base or a competitive record. That is true of every collectible card game’s first set, and it has a consequence that is structural rather than speculative: a later set can be reprinted, but a first set cannot become the first set again. A second printing of it is still a reprint of an existing set rather than the arrival of a new game.

That is the whole of the argument, and it is worth stating plainly rather than dressing it up. It is not a prediction about prices and it does not require any claim about which cards in the first set are good. It is a statement about supply and about time: the first set is the one printing of this game that was made for an audience that did not exist yet. The sets so far lists the line in order.

The treatments, as the publisher places them

The premium ladder above the ordinary rare slot is stated by the publisher, and the set releasing in October extends it. The table below is the order the publisher describes, with what each treatment is.

Treatment What the publisher says about it
Ultimate Rare The top rarity. Riot states that a pack can hold at most one, and that the second one, in Radiance, is significantly harder to find than the first
Showcase A themed premium treatment, introduced as Special cards in Vendetta and continued in Radiance
Overnumbered A card whose number runs past the total number of cards in the set. In Radiance all nine new Legends have one, and some carry an artist’s signature
Special alternate art A premium alternate art, stated to appear at roughly the same frequency as an ordinary alternate art card
Alternate art A different illustration of the same card
Alternate art Runes Alternate art Runes, which are cosmetic since Runes are a separate deck

Reading that table downwards, the interesting thing is where the publisher has chosen to put pressure. The Ultimate Rare is scarce by appearance rate, while the Overnumbered and signature treatments are scarce by being restricted to named cards. Those are two different mechanisms producing two different kinds of chase, and a collection can be built around either.

How rare the top tier is, in the publisher’s own words

The publisher has stated the appearance rate of the Radiance Ultimate Rare, which makes it one of the few scarcity figures in this game that can be quoted rather than estimated.

Statement As published
Appearance rate Approximately 0.025% of booster packs, averaged across the whole print run
Per-pack limit At most one Ultimate Rare in a pack
In a sealed product No pack, box or case is stated to contain one
Card type A showcase Battlefield, the game’s first Ultimate Rare of that type

The last two rows are the ones that matter most for anyone thinking about this tier. There is no product in the line that is stated to contain an Ultimate Rare, and the published rate is an average across the print run rather than a property of any pack. That is why the publisher’s own description of the change is framed around how rare the card is rather than around where to find it.

What this page does not claim

No prices, and no ranking of cards by value. The game is about a year old, and while that is long enough for a treatment structure to be readable it is not long enough for a ranking to be checkable, so this page publishes the structure and none of the value. It also does not state which champions are the most wanted, because the publisher has not run a vote and this site will not publish a ranking it has invented. Every treatment, rate and product detail above is quoted from the publisher’s own announcements and product pages.

Frequently asked questions

Why would a first-set Riftbound card be harder to find than a later one?

Because a set is printed once and a first set cannot become a first set again. The argument is about supply and timing rather than about card quality: the first set was printed for a game that had no players yet, and a later reprint of it would be a reprint rather than a new arrival.

What is the highest treatment in Riftbound?

The Ultimate Rare, which the publisher states is the top rarity and which appears in at most one card per pack. Below it sit the Showcase and Overnumbered treatments, then Special alternate art, then ordinary alternate art.

How rare is an Ultimate Rare in Riftbound?

Riot states that one appears in approximately 0.025% of Radiance booster packs averaged across the print run, that a pack holds at most one, and that no pack, box or case is stated to contain one.

What is a signature Riftbound card?

An Overnumbered card that also carries the artist’s signature. In Radiance all nine new Legends have Overnumbered variants and some of those carry a signature, which makes the signature a finish on top of a treatment rather than a rarity of its own.

Which Riftbound champion appears most often?

Some champions appear in more than one product with different artwork, which makes one champion capable of existing as more than one object. The publisher names the champions in each product, and the Champion list on this site follows that naming rather than inventing a ranking.
