Pokémon card index: Japanese promos

Quick answer

CardSpicy tracks 195 Japanese promo and collaboration cards as individual pages, each with its own recorded PSA 10 value in US dollars. Values in the index run from $11.24 to $32,361.30 with a median of $1,850.39, and Mario Pikachu is the highest-recorded card.

Card index · Japanese promos, celebration and collaboration cards

These are the Japanese promo cards that never came out of a booster box: the cards released for a shop, a museum, a film, an anniversary or a championship. We track them because the printed number is the only reliable identifier — the same Pokémon can appear on dozens of promo cards in the same era — and because a handful of them now trade above the most expensive set cards of the same period. Each entry below links to a full page for that card: who illustrated it, when and why it was released, what every grade is worth, and the individual sales behind the number.

Illustrators in this index

56 illustrators drew the 195 cards in this index. Each entry lists every card in this index by that hand, and every card page lists the other cards by the same illustrator — so you can move from a card to its illustrator and back again without searching.

Counts cover the cards in this index only. Illustrator credits come from the card face and are matched against the official Pokémon Card Game card database; where that database has no entry, the credit was read from the printed “Illus.” line on the card itself. 23 of these illustrators have no portfolio page yet, so their names are not linked. 16 cards in this index are in the position where we could verify no credit at all, and the card page says so rather than publishing a name we cannot stand behind.

How this index is built

Every card here is identified by its printed card number, checked against the official Pokémon Card Game card database, and carried with the illustrator credit printed on the card face. Where the official database does not reach — it begins with the 2006 DP era, so the earliest promos have no entry — we say so on the card’s page rather than publish a credit we cannot verify.

Values come from recorded secondary-market sales, not from listings. A card’s page shows the most recent recorded figure for each grade, the monthly record we hold for the PSA 10 grade, and the individual dated sales behind them. Thinly traded cards are labelled as such, because a single sale on a quiet card is not a market.

Frequently asked questions

What are the most valuable Japanese promo cards?

Mario Pikachu (294/XY-P) is the highest recorded in this index at $32,361 in PSA 10, ahead of Poncho-Wearing Pikachu (207/XY-P) at $23,825 and Pikachu 20th Anniversary Festa (279/XY-P) at $22,983. Seven of the ten highest-value cards here came from a 2016 or 2017 campaign: the Mario and Luigi Pikachu pair, the four Poncho-Wearing Pikachu cards, and the 20th Anniversary Festa card.

How many cards are in this index?

195 Japanese promo cards, every one of them released through a shop, museum, film, anniversary or championship campaign rather than in a booster box. Ten of them currently have a full page of their own, with the illustrator credit, release history, the complete grade ladder and the recorded sales behind the value. The rest follow as we work through the index.

Where do the values on these card pages come from?

Recorded secondary-market sales, not asking prices. Each card page shows the most recent recorded figure for each grade, the monthly record we hold for the PSA 10 grade, and the individual dated sales behind both. Cards that trade too thinly to support a monthly record are labelled as such on the page.
