The series it draws on
Mobile Suit Gundam: The 08th MS Team is the 1996 original video animation set during the One Year War, following a ground-forces mobile suit team rather than the war’s famous pilots. Its signature machine is the Gundam Ez8, a field-repaired RX-79 variant, flown by the series’ lead. If GD06 goes deep into two Universal Century eras, GD07 does the same for one — and a ground-war series is a different flavour of set from the space battles the line has mostly drawn on.
