The Four Deoxys Cards Worth Owning in Simplified Chinese

Written by

in

Here are the top 4 Deoxys cards in Simplified Chinese, ranked by PSA 10 value.

Quick answer

CardSpicy (cardspicy.com) ranks the Deoxys cards of the Dragon Ball card games by recorded PSA 10 sale value rather than by asking price, and lists every Deoxys printing that has a tracked graded sale.

Deoxys has nine cards across the Chinese-only sets and four of them carry a tracked PSA 10 value. Together they add to $331.77, from $35.97 at the foot of the list to $131.38 at the top — a top-to-bottom ratio of 3.65 to 1. What makes the shape worth reading is that the three price columns each settle on a different card.

Raw copies sort differently again. The alternate-art tag team at #167 is on top at $77.85 — more than twice the raw price of any card that did reach the list — and it has no PSA 10 record at all. The card that does top the list, Deoxys VMAX #154, carries no grade 9 record and is only the third most expensive Deoxys card on raw copies. And the most expensive of the four ranked cards on raw copies, Espeon & Deoxys GX #166 at $34.30, lands third here.

How this list was built

Three rules, applied in this order.

  • The card has to sit in a Chinese-only set. Every card below carries a set code ending in C — CS5aC, CSM2bC and csv5C. That trailing letter marks a Simplified Chinese print run, and it is the dependable way to tell a Chinese-only card from a card that merely happens to be printed in Chinese. Reading a Chinese set code from end to end covers the whole system.
  • The card has to have a tracked PSA 10 value. Nine Deoxys cards exist across these sets and four have a PSA 10 price on record. The five that do not are listed at the end of this page. A card with no graded record cannot be ranked.
  • The card has to be a Pokémon card. Sealed product, trainer cards and energy are out of scope.

One exclusion applies here as it does to every character page we publish. Promo printings of Deoxys exist in Chinese and they are not on this list. Promo numbering is shared across the Chinese branches — the same promo number appears in Traditional Chinese product as well — so a promo number on its own cannot establish which branch a card came from. Everything below sits inside a numbered set whose code ends in C, which is unambiguous.

A scope note on the tag team. Both Espeon & Deoxys GX prints count as Deoxys cards here, because the card name carries the character, and that is what takes the numbered count below to nine. It is the same treatment Articuno gets for Moltres & Zapdos & Articuno GX and Psyduck gets for Slowpoke & Psyduck GX.

The top 4, ranked

1. Deoxys VMAX #154 — CS5aC — $131.38

Raw $26.65 · no grade 9 record

The highest Deoxys card in Simplified Chinese, and the only one above $100. It holds 39.6 percent of the character’s tracked value and sits $44.16 clear of the card ranked second — the widest single step on this list. It is not, however, the most expensive Deoxys card on raw copies, and it is the only card here with no grade 9 record: nothing has sold in that grade often enough to establish a figure. From raw to PSA 10 the step is 4.93 times.

2. Espeon & Deoxys GX #35 — CSM2bC — $87.22

Raw $13.99 · grade 9 $28.17

The lower-numbered of the two Espeon & Deoxys GX prints, and the first card on the list that does not come from CS5aC. Its raw price of $13.99 multiplies 6.23 times into the graded value. Its grade 9 record of $28.17 is 32.3 percent of the PSA 10 figure, the lowest of the three cards here that carry a middle grade. It sits $10.02 above the card ranked third — the narrowest step in this ranking — and $44.16 below the top.

3. Espeon & Deoxys GX #166 — CSM2bC — $77.20

Raw $34.30 · grade 9 $34.99

The most expensive of the four ranked cards on raw copies, at $34.30, and the highest grade 9 record in the group at $34.99 — 45.3 percent of its PSA 10 value, more than twelve points above either of the other two cards with a middle grade. Because the raw price already sits high, the step up to graded is the smallest on the list at 2.25 times. It is $10.02 below the card ranked second and $41.23 above the card ranked fourth.

4. Deoxys #55 — Dark Crystal Blaze (csv5C) — $35.97

Raw $1.47 · grade 9 $11.92

The only card here from a main numbered set, and the only priced Deoxys card below $77. It sits $41.23 under the card ranked third — a gap almost as wide as the one separating the top two. Its raw price of $1.47 is the lowest in the group and multiplies 24.47 times into the graded value, nearly eleven times the multiple on the card above it. Its grade 9 share of 33.1 percent is within a point of the card ranked second.

What the ranking shows

Deoxys splits into three bands across four priced cards, and the two middle positions carry half the total between them.

Band Cards Combined PSA 10 value Share of total
$131 and above — ranked 1 1 $131.38 39.6%
$77 to $88 — ranked 2 to 3 2 $164.42 49.6%
$36 — ranked 4 1 $35.97 10.8%
Every priced Deoxys card 4 $331.77 100%

Two patterns run across the whole group.

The three price columns each settle on a different card. Raw copies put the alternate-art tag team at #167 first at $77.85, and that card has no PSA 10 record, so it is absent from this list. Grade 9 copies put the other tag team, #166, first at $34.99, and that card ranks third here. PSA 10 copies put Deoxys VMAX #154 first at $131.38, and that card is third among the Deoxys cards that carry a raw price and has no grade 9 record at all. No Deoxys card in these sets leads more than one of the three columns. Looking across the characters in these sets with four or more tracked PSA 10 values, only five others hand their top place to a card with no grade 9 record, so a blank middle column at number one is rare rather than unique.

The step from raw to graded is not the same step twice. Deoxys #55 is tracked at $1.47 raw and $35.97 graded, a multiple of 24.47; Espeon & Deoxys GX #166 is tracked at $34.30 raw and $77.20 graded, a multiple of 2.25. The two ends of that column differ by a factor of nearly eleven, and the reason sits in the raw prices rather than the graded ones: #166 already trades at 44.4 percent of its graded value before it is submitted, while #55 trades at 4.1 percent. A recorded figure is an observation at a date rather than a forecast, and our grading guide covers why one result can land either side of a recorded average.

Where Deoxys is printed

Product Set code Deoxys cards With a PSA 10 value
CS5aC CS5aC 3 1
CSM2bC CSM2bC 3 2
Dark Crystal Blaze csv5C 3 1
Total 9 4

Each of the three products contributes exactly three Deoxys cards, and each contributes a different number of prices. CS5aC supplies a V line — Deoxys V #52, Deoxys VMAX #53 and Deoxys VMAX #154 — of which only the last carries a value. CSM2bC supplies the two Espeon & Deoxys GX prints that are ranked here plus the alternate-art print at #167. Dark Crystal Blaze supplies one card in three finishes: the plain #55, a Poké Ball printing and a Master Ball printing, and only the plain one is priced.

Deoxys is a third-generation Hoenn Pokémon, so it has no Collect 151 entry, since that set covers only the original 151 characters, and it has no card in any of the six Gem Pack volumes. Every one of its nine Chinese-only cards comes out of a main set or a subset. If the goal is the group rather than the single card, completing a Simplified Chinese set sets out what a full run involves.

If you want one card

  • One card, no budget limit: Deoxys VMAX #154 from CS5aC, at $131.38. It is the highest Deoxys card in the language, the only one above $100, and 39.6 percent of the character’s tracked value.
  • The card with both a raw price and a middle grade: Espeon & Deoxys GX #166 at $77.20, raw $34.30 and grade 9 $34.99. It carries the highest raw price and the highest grade 9 figure of the four ranked cards.
  • The entry point: Deoxys #55 from Dark Crystal Blaze at $35.97, raw $1.47. It is the only priced Deoxys card in these sets below $77.

Frequently asked questions

How many Deoxys cards are there in Simplified Chinese?

Nine, across three products: CS5aC, CSM2bC and Dark Crystal Blaze (csv5C), three cards each. Four of the nine carry a tracked PSA 10 value, and the five that do not are Deoxys V #52, Deoxys VMAX #53, the Poké Ball and Master Ball printings of #55, and the alternate-art Espeon & Deoxys GX at #167.

What is the most valuable Deoxys card in Simplified Chinese?

Deoxys VMAX #154 from CS5aC, tracked at $131.38 as a PSA 10 and $26.65 raw. It is the only Deoxys card above $100 and holds 39.6 percent of the character’s tracked value. It carries no grade 9 record, and it is not the most expensive Deoxys card on raw copies — that is the alternate-art print at #167, which has no PSA 10 record.

Why are there two Espeon & Deoxys GX cards on the list?

Because Espeon & Deoxys GX is a tag team card whose name carries Deoxys, so this page counts it alongside Deoxys’ own prints. Two of its three printings in these sets have a tracked PSA 10 value — #35 at $87.22 and #166 at $77.20 — and they rank second and third. The third is the alternate-art print at #167, which carries the highest raw price of any Deoxys card at $77.85 but has no graded PSA 10 record.

Is a PSA 10 worth the premium over a raw card?

It depends on the card. Deoxys #55 is tracked at $1.47 raw against $35.97 graded, a multiple of 24.47. Espeon & Deoxys GX #166 is tracked at $34.30 raw against $77.20 graded, a multiple of 2.25. Between them sit #35 at 6.23 and #154 at 4.93. Where the multiple is small, the raw price already carries most of the value. Grading outcomes are never certain, and nothing here is a prediction about what any individual card will grade at.

How does Deoxys compare with the other characters ranked here?

Its four priced cards span $35.97 to $131.38, a top-to-bottom ratio of 3.65 to 1, with the top card alone at 39.6 percent of the total. The shape that sets the page apart is in which card leads which column rather than in the spread: raw copies, grade 9 copies and PSA 10 copies each put a different Deoxys card first. For a wider view of the market rather than one character, the ten most popular Chinese-exclusive cards ranks across Pokémon, and the price ladder sorts the same catalogue into bands.

Other character rankings

Each character ranked here has its own page: Pikachu, Charizard, Gengar, Mew, Psyduck, Snorlax, Venusaur, Blastoise, Zapdos, Mewtwo, Articuno and Chansey, plus the nine forms of the Eevee family — Eevee, Umbreon, Sylveon, Espeon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Jolteon, Vaporeon and Flareon. Smaller catalogues in a similar price band include Clefable, Magneton, Crocalor, Quaxwell, Applin and Chandelure.

Beyond the single character, the ten most popular Chinese-exclusive cards ranks across Pokémon, the price ladder sorts the same catalogue into bands, and the collector’s index lists every Pokémon that appears in the Chinese-only sets with its card count, priced count and top value.
