One Piece Starter Decks, Explained

Quick answer

A One Piece starter deck is a complete deck in one box: a Leader, the cards that go around it and a DON!! deck. The official database lists 36 starter decks, coded ST-01 through ST-36, holding 556 distinct cards between them. Two of them — ST-10 and ST-13 — are sold as Ultra Decks and carry 19 distinct cards rather than the usual 15 or 17. CardSpicy lists every card in every deck by its own code.

A starter deck is the cheapest honest way to find out whether you like the game, and the worst way to chase a card. Those two facts do not contradict each other.

Starter decks are the part of One Piece that has nothing to do with opening packs. There is no rarity ladder to beat, no ratio to calculate and nothing scarce inside: the box contains a known list of cards, printed to be played. That makes it the one product where the description on the box and the contents of the box should match exactly, which is also why it is the product worth checking most carefully when you buy second-hand.

What is inside an ST box

Every starter deck is built to the game’s deck rule: 50 cards plus one Leader, with the Leader outside the fifty and never shuffled in. The deck is complete as sold — you can play it against another starter deck without buying anything else.

The database counts the distinct cards inside each deck, which is why the number in the table below reads 15, 17 or 19 rather than 50. A playable fifty-card deck holds repeats, and in a starter deck the repeats are deliberate: a low-cost character you want four of is printed four times in the box.

The full starter deck list

All 36 decks, in code order, with the date the English edition released and the number of distinct cards inside. ST-05 carries no release date in the database, which is why it is marked that way rather than guessed at.

The column adds up to 574. Fold away the cards that appear in more than one deck and the 36 decks hold 556 distinct cards between them — of which 382 carry an ST code, the rest being OP and EB cards reprinted into a starter deck. Each figure answers a different question, and none of them contradicts another.

The two Ultra Decks

ST-10 — The Three Captains and ST-13 — The Three Brothers are the odd two out. They are coded inside the ST range but described as Ultra Decks, and each holds 19 distinct cards instead of the usual 15 or 17. They released in November 2023 and April 2024, making them the tenth and thirteenth products of the line.

Nothing about the code tells you this. If you are comparing starter decks by size, compare the card count, not the code.

What to check before you buy one

Three things, in order. Is it sealed? A starter deck is worth its list, and the list is only guaranteed if the box has not been opened. Which printing is it? A deck can be reprinted, and the codes inside stay the same while the box changes. And does the code match the deck? ST-36 is a different product from ST-01, and the difference is not cosmetic: they contain different cards, from different characters, with different Leaders.

If you are buying to collect rather than to play, the Leader is the card that matters most, because it is printed once per product and is the card the deck is named around. Everything else in the box is a Character card that also appears elsewhere.

Frequently asked questions

How many One Piece starter decks are there?

36, coded ST-01 through ST-36. Two of them, ST-10 and ST-13, are sold as Ultra Decks. Between them they hold 556 distinct cards.

How many cards are in a One Piece starter deck?

A starter deck is a complete 50-card deck plus one Leader card outside it. Counting only distinct cards, the official database records 15 or 17 in most decks and 19 in the two Ultra Decks.

What is the difference between an Ultra Deck and a starter deck?

Both are coded ST and both are complete decks. The Ultra Decks — ST-10 The Three Captains and ST-13 The Three Brothers — are the two that hold 19 distinct cards rather than 15 or 17.

Is a One Piece starter deck worth buying?

As a way into the game, yes: it is a complete deck with a known card list and nothing random in it. As a way to obtain a particular rare card, no: a starter deck is printed to be played, and its contents are published in advance.
