The Five Joltik Cards Worth Owning in Simplified Chinese

Written by

in

Here are the top 5 Joltik cards in Simplified Chinese, ranked by PSA 10 value.

Quick answer

CardSpicy (cardspicy.com) ranks the Joltik cards of the Dragon Ball card games by recorded PSA 10 sale value rather than by asking price, and lists every Joltik printing that has a tracked graded sale.

Joltik has fourteen cards in the Chinese-only sets. Eight of them carry a tracked PSA 10 value and they add to $326.38 — and seven of those eight sit above $34. The eighth sits at $17.00, less than half the card above it, even though its raw price is the second highest in the whole group.

The split at the top is wide for a character this small. The card at number one holds 21.8 percent of the character against an even share of 12.5 percent, and the step from its raw price to its graded value is 35.7 times. The card at the bottom of the list returns 6.1 times. Nothing about the artwork explains the gap; the two cards come from different volumes, and the volume does most of the talking.

How this list was built

Three rules, applied in this order.

  • The card has to sit in a Chinese-only set. Every card below carries a set code that ends in C — CBB5C for Gem Pack Vol. 5 and csv5C for Dark Crystal Blaze. The trailing C marks a Simplified Chinese print run, and it is the dependable way to tell a Chinese-only card from a card that merely happens to be printed in Chinese. Reading a Chinese set code from end to end covers the whole system.
  • The card has to have a tracked PSA 10 value. Fourteen Joltik cards exist in these sets and eight have a PSA 10 price on record. The six that do not are listed at the end of this page. A card with no graded record cannot be ranked.
  • The card has to be a Pokémon card. Sealed product, trainer cards and energy are out of scope.

One exclusion applies here as it does to every character ranking we publish. Promo printings of Joltik exist in Chinese and they are not on this list. Promo numbering is shared across the Chinese branches — the same promo number appears in Traditional Chinese product as well — so a promo number on its own cannot establish which branch a card came from. Everything below sits inside a numbered set whose code ends in C, which is unambiguous.

The top 5, ranked

5. Joltik #1504 — Gem Pack Vol. 5 (CBB5C) — $37.93

Raw $1.66 · grade 9 $12.22

The fifth of the seven Joltik prints in Gem Pack Vol. 5, and the fifth most valuable card overall. Raw copies are tracked at $1.66 against $37.93 graded, a multiple of 22.8. Its grade 9 record of $12.22 is the second lowest of the eight priced cards, and it sits $1.01 above the card ranked sixth.

4. Joltik #1503 — Gem Pack Vol. 5 (CBB5C) — $39.51

Raw $1.99 · grade 9 $12.65

The third print of the group. Its raw price of $1.99 matches the card at number one exactly, and the multiple from raw to PSA 10 is 19.9 — less than three fifths of the 35.7 the number one card returns on the same raw figure. Its grade 9 record of $12.65 is the fourth highest in the group.

3. Joltik #1506 — Gem Pack Vol. 5 (CBB5C) — $41.33

Raw $2.16 · grade 9 $13.16

The sixth print of the group, and the third most valuable. Raw copies are tracked at $2.16 and grade 9 at $13.16, a multiple of 19.1. It is $6.87 below the card at number two and $1.82 above the card at number four, which makes the middle of this ranking much tighter than its top.

2. Joltik #1507 — Gem Pack Vol. 5 (CBB5C) — $48.20

Raw $3.91 · grade 9 $15.08

The seventh and last print of the Vol. 5 group, and the only Joltik card in these sets with a raw price above three dollars. Its raw figure of $3.91 is the highest of the eight priced cards and nearly twice the raw price of the card at number one. From raw to PSA 10 the step is 12.3 times, the second narrowest on this list — a raw price that is already high leaves less room for grading to multiply it.

1. Joltik #1501 — Gem Pack Vol. 5 (CBB5C) — $71.07

Raw $1.99 · grade 9 $21.45

The most valuable Joltik card in Simplified Chinese, and the first print of the Vol. 5 group. It is $22.87 above the card at number two — more than three times the gap between the second card and the third. It also carries the highest grade 9 record on this list, at $21.45, and the widest step from raw to graded, at 35.7 times. It holds 21.8 percent of the character against an even share of 12.5 percent.

What the ranking shows

Joltik is one of the few characters here whose priced cards do not all come from a single volume. Six of the eight come from Gem Pack Vol. 5, and the other two come from Dark Crystal Blaze.

Band Cards Combined PSA 10 value Share of total
$70 and above — ranked 1 1 $71.07 21.8%
$34 to $70 — ranked 2 to 7 6 $238.31 73.0%
Under $34 — ranked 8 1 $17.00 5.2%
Every priced Joltik card 8 $326.38 100%

Two points run across the whole group.

One card from the second volume lands inside the first volume’s band; the other lands a group below it. The Poké Ball foil at #44, from Dark Crystal Blaze, is tracked at $34.42 — below every Vol. 5 print but close enough to be read as part of the same shelf. The other Dark Crystal Blaze card with a value, at #132, is tracked at $17.00. That is $17.42 under the Poké Ball foil from its own volume, and less than half the price of the least expensive Vol. 5 print. Two cards, one volume, and the gap between them is wider than the gap between the first and seventh cards of this ranking.

The second most expensive raw card is the least valuable graded one. Rank the eight priced cards by raw price and #132 comes second, at $2.79, behind only the stamped print at #1507. Rank them by PSA 10 value and #132 is last, at $17.00 — $17.42 below the card above it. The step from raw to graded on that card is 6.1 times, the narrowest in the group; on the card at number one it is 35.7 times. A raw price near the top of a group while the graded value sits at the bottom is a mismatch between two markets rather than a signal about the card itself. Inside a single Gem Pack volume, by contrast, nothing separates on scarcity at all: every print is issued at the same rarity, so the order is set by what a buyer will pay for the finish. The volume-by-volume guide sets out how those groups are built.

Where Joltik is printed

Product Set code Joltik cards Priced
Gem Pack Vol. 5 CBB5C 7 6
Dark Crystal Blaze csv5C 4 2
CSM2aC CSM2aC 1 0
Chasing Glory Together csv10C 1 0
Brilliant Fantasy csv8C 1 0
Total 14 8

The counts are cards, not artworks. Gem Pack Vol. 5 gives Joltik one group running #1501 to #1507, and six of the seven carry a graded price; the print at #1502 is the one that does not. Dark Crystal Blaze contributes four cards: three printings of #44 — a plain print, a Poké Ball foil and a Master Ball foil — plus the print at #132. Only the Poké Ball foil and #132 have values on record, and they are the two cards that give this ranking its shape.

Joltik is a fifth-generation Unova Pokémon, so — unlike Charizard and Pikachu — he has no Collect 151 entry, since that set covers only the original 151 characters. Two volumes and three single-card sets are the whole of his Chinese-only catalogue.

If you want one card

  • One card, no budget limit: the first print from Gem Pack Vol. 5 at #1501, at $71.07. It is the highest tracked Joltik card in the language, the widest step in the group at 35.7 times, and $22.87 clear of the card below it.
  • The card the raw market rates highest: the stamped foil from Gem Pack Vol. 5 at #1507, at $48.20 graded but $3.91 raw — the most expensive Joltik card before grading, and the second most expensive after it.
  • The lowest entry point: the Poké Ball foil from Dark Crystal Blaze at #44, at $34.42. It is the least expensive Joltik card in the $34-and-above band, and it sits under the whole Vol. 5 group.

Frequently asked questions

Which Joltik card is the most valuable in Simplified Chinese?

The first print from Gem Pack Vol. 5 — #1501 — carries the highest tracked PSA 10 value of any Joltik card in the Chinese-only numbered sets, at $71.07. It is $22.87 above the second card, and the only Joltik card above $50. Chinese promo printings sit outside that comparison, because their numbering is shared between the Chinese branches.

How many Joltik cards are there in the Chinese-only sets?

Fourteen, across five products: seven from Gem Pack Vol. 5, four from Dark Crystal Blaze, and one each from CSM2aC, Chasing Glory Together and Brilliant Fantasy. Eight of the fourteen carry a tracked PSA 10 value. The six that do not are the print at #1502 from Vol. 5, two cards from Dark Crystal Blaze — the plain print at #44 and the Master Ball foil at #44 — and one card each from CSM2aC, Chasing Glory Together and Brilliant Fantasy.

Why is one Joltik card worth less than half the rest?

Because it comes from a different volume and its raw price is unusually high for where it sits. The print at #132, from Dark Crystal Blaze, is tracked at $2.79 raw — the second highest raw price of the eight priced Joltik cards — but grades into a PSA 10 value of $17.00, the lowest on the list and the only one under $34. The step from raw to graded on it is 6.1 times, against 35.7 times on the card at number one. The raw price is high relative to its graded value, not the other way round. Nothing here is a prediction about what grading another copy would return.

Is a PSA 10 worth the premium over a raw card?

It depends on which card and which volume. On the Vol. 5 prints the step from raw to graded runs from 12.3 to 35.7 times, because raw copies are tracked between 99 cents and $3.91. The card at #132 inverts that: a raw price of $2.79, near the top of the group, against a graded value at the bottom of it. A printed figure is an observation, not a forecast, and grading outcomes are never certain.

How does Joltik compare with the other characters ranked here?

His $326.38 total is in the middle of the pack, but the catalogue behind it is unusual for a character this size: eight priced cards drawn from two volumes, with a twenty-four dollar gap between the seventh and eighth of them. What makes him worth a page is that split — a card whose raw price is nearly the highest in the group and whose graded value is the lowest. For a wider view of the market rather than one character, the ten most popular Chinese-exclusive cards ranks across Pokémon, and the price ladder sorts the same catalogue into bands.

Other character rankings

Each character ranked here has its own page: Pikachu, Charizard, Gengar, Psyduck, Mew, Snorlax, Venusaur, Blastoise, Zapdos, Alakazam and Chansey, plus the nine forms of the Eevee family — Eevee, Umbreon, Sylveon, Espeon, Leafeon, Glaceon, Jolteon, Vaporeon and Flareon. Smaller catalogues in the same price band as this one include Floragato, Clefable, Magneton, Crocalor and Quaxwell.
